The Romanian Roman-Catholic Archbishop Anton Durcovici (1888-1951), who died in a communist prison in Romania, is to be beatified, the Vatican has announced. Two months ago another Romanian martyr, Vladimir Ghika, was beatified. Durcovici, A Roman-Catholic bishop of Iasi, known as an opponent of the communist regime, was arrested in June 1949. In 1951 he was transferred to a prison in Sighet where tens of thousands of Romanians died, clergymen included. His beatification process was initiated in January 1997 during John Paul IIs pontificate. We remind you that on August 31st another Romanian bishop, Vladimir Ghika, who died in a communist prison, was beatified in Bucharest.



The Romanian customs authority will introduce, as of November 15, special measures for checking personal luggage at the border with Serbia, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, which are also the EU’s external border, reads a Thursday release by the Romanian Customs Authority. The decision is aimed at limiting the frequent introduction in Romania, by some travellers, of important quantities of products, which they say are for personal use but which are in fact traded on the black market. These products are usually cigarettes, alcohol, fuel, sunflower oil, sugar and fresh vegetables. As of November 15, travellers must declare in writing all goods they carry in their personal luggage.



A Romanian top prosecutor has been placed under preventive arrest for 29 days for tax evasion estimated at 50 million Euro. 27 other people have been detained in the same case, dubbed by the press ‘the meat case’. According to investigators, the suspects were running a ring of shell companies that attempted to monopolize meat manufacture and sales in stores. Among the people under investigation is a Social Democratic senator, under suspicion of abuse of position.




Prince Charles features in the third installment of the Wild Carpathia documentary and promotional miniseries, where he describes Romania as a wonderful country with remarkable people and unique pastures. The film promotes several areas of Romania, describing the Carpathian Mountains as having a tremendous tourist potential with great financial potential, on condition efforts are made towards conservation. Prince Charles visits Romania regularly, having purchased a few old traditional houses in Transylvania.




Radio Bucharest continues celebrations for the 85th anniversary of Romanian broadcasting. The National Radio Orchestra and conductor Cristian Mandeal accompany violinist Gabriel Croitoru, cellist Razvan Suma and pianist Horia Mihail. On the line-up are compositions by Mousorgsky, Beethoven and Enescu. On 1 November, Radio Romania celebrates 85 years of public radio. The radio orchestras and choirs are also celebrating 85 years of existence.
