VISIT Romanian president Klaus Iohannis is continuing his formal visit to
Italy. The Romanian official held talks with his Italian counterpart Sergio
Mattarella on issues related to the bilateral consolidated strategic
partnership as well as cooperation at European and international levels. Iohannis
has underlined the excellent relations between Romania and Italy, relations
based on very old historical and cultural ties, as well as on social, economic
and human connections at present. Iohannis thanked Italy for the way in which
the Romanians are being treated and integrated in that country. We recall that 1.2
million Romanians are currently living in Italy, forming the largest Romanian
community abroad. On Sunday the Romanian president joined members of the
Romanian community in Italy for a symbolic moment, the projection of the
Romanian flag colours on the column of Emperor Trajan, who in 106 a.d.
conquered the ancient kingdom of Dacia, located on the territory of the
present-day Romania. The Romanian official also met representatives of the orthodox,
Greek and Roman Catholic churches on Sunday.
TENNIS Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has reached her 50th
week on the first position in the world standings, a WTA ranking published on
Monday shows. The Romanian occupies the 11th position in an all-time
ranking and next week she will equal the performance obtained by Victoria
Azarenka of Belarus on the 10th position with 51 weeks. In this
week’s ranking Halep’s advance against the second position occupied by Caroline
Wozniacki rose to 960 points while Angelique Kerber of Germany on the third
position is over 2000 points behind the leader.
EMERGENCY DECREE The Romanian Government on Monday passed an emergency decree for amending
some justice laws, Romanian Justice Minister Tudorel Toader announced. He explained
that the decree was needed to correlate the three justice laws modified this
year, and also to include some recommendations of the Venice Commission and
requests of the Higher Council of Magistracy. Among the modifications are the
increase, from 8 to 15 years, of the minimum number of years of work within the
legal system in order to be eligible for leading positions within the
Prosecutor’s Office with the High Court of Cassation and Justice, the
Anti-Corruption Directorate and the Directorate for Investigating Organized
Crime and Terrorism. In reaction to the emergency decree passed today by the
Government, Romania’s Prosecutor General, Augustin Lazar, says that amendments to
the justice laws have been done hastily and are affecting investigations in the
big criminal cases.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT Romania’s
Agriculture Minister, Petre Daea on Monday sent to Brussels, the documents that
Romania needs in order to apply for financial support from the European
Commission to combat the effects of the African swine fever. Romania is
expected to receive 40 million Euros, an amount which is to be invested in
laboratories and the proper medical equipment to detect the disease and rebuild
its livestock.
