Romania’s draft budget for 2014 will be ready by the end of this month, after talks with IMF, European Commission and World Bank experts, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta announced. According to Ponta, the project will be approved by the Government on the first week of November and then sent to Parliament for debate. According to the Prime Minister, the next year’s budget will support investment using both European and government funds.
A new European program for Roma integration, ROMACT, will be launched on Tuesday in Romania, reads a Council of Europe release. The new program aims at improving the access of Roma ethnics to education, housing and employment. The project will run for one year in Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Italy and will focus on building the capacity and political will of local and regional authorities to develop and implement strategies and policies for Roma inclusion. The Roma ethnics in Romania account for 2.5% of the population and are the second largest minority in the country after the Hungarian one. ROMACT is a joint initiative of the Council of Europe, the European Commission and the European Alliance of Cities and Regions for Roma Inclusion.
The Romanian Parliament’s special committee commissioned with drawing up a report on the gold and silver mining project in Rosia Montana will present their conclusions next week after having completed hearings on this matter on Friday. For the past three weeks, the committee has been hearing Government members, representatives of the Canadian investor and civil society representatives. We remind you that in Bucharest and other Romanian cities, thousands of people took to the streets in protest at the gold and silver mining project in Rosia Montana, while miners in the area voiced their support for the project.
Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta congratulated astronomers Ovidiu Tercu and Alex Dumitriu on the occasion of the International Astronomy Day. The two have this year discovered two new variable stars, which they named Galati V1 and Galati V2, the only starts that bear a Romanian name. The stars are part of the constellations Cassiopeia and Andromeda, respctively .
The Slovenian-German coproduction Boles”, by young director Spela Cadez won the 8th edition of the Anim’est International festival, the most important annimation event in Romania. The prize for best feature film went to the French director Jean-Christophe Dessaint, for The Day of the Crows”, while another French film, Women’s Letters”, won the award for best short film. Over 1000 productions from 65 countries were screened for more than a week at the Anim’est festival in Bucharest. The festival is member of the Cartoon pan-European circuit and, as of 2002, has been supported by the MEDIA programme.
