Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in Astana today have signed an agreement on the creation of the Eurasian economic Union, to be launched on January the 1st, 2015. Sealing the document will be the presidents of the three countries, Vladimir Putin, Aleksandr Lukashenko and Nursultan Nazarbayev. The new Union is set to secure a stronger integration of the three countries around the world. We recall that since 2010 the three states have already been part of a customs’ Union. According to Moscow, the signatory countries have made a commitment to guarantee a free circulation of commodities, services, capital and workforce, thus implementing a policy targeting such key economic areas as energy, industry, agriculture,, transports. According to the AFP, the new Economic Union should reassert Moscow’s influence among its former Soviet allies.



The Central Electoral Bureau today has made public the final results of the Euro-parliamentarian elections held in Romania on May 25. Winner of the ballot is the governing left-of-center alliance made of the Social Democrats, the National Union for the Progress of Romania and the Conservative Party with 16 seats. The right-of-center opposition parties, the National Liberal and the Liberal Democratic Party have won 5 and 6 seats, respectively. Governing partner Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians from Romania has won two seats, the opposition pro-presidential People’s Movement Party also two, while independent candidate Mircea Diaconu won one seat. Also today, the Central Electoral Bureau will be handing the certificates attesting the election of the 32 Romanian euro-parliamentarians. National Liberal and Democrat Liberal representatives have decided to merge into a large right-of center party and to nominate a single candidate for the presidential elections in November.



The President of the Cluj County Council (in Romania’s central Transylvanian region) Horia Uioreanu today will appear before a court, with the suggestion of being kept in custody. Uioreanu is facing charges in a file, on various counts. He has been a charged with bribe-taking, false in private signed documents and aiding and abetting in a case of money laundering. According to investigators, Uioreanu used his authority to help a businessman’s firm to conclude preferential contracts with Cluj County Council, that also including mocked open tender sessions. In another move, the mayor of Piatra Neamt in the north-east. Gheorghe Stefan will be placed under investigation, under judicial control. According to prosecutors, Stefan initiated financial operations that were incompatible with his position. Gheorghe Stefan has also been accused of using his influence as president of the local organization of a political party to obtain undue gains.

The discussions revolve mainly around relationship Romania has with the European Council and the situation in Ukraine. The European official also attends in Bucharest a meeting of the ministers of justice and internal affairs from the 12 member states of the South East European Cooperation Process. The topics are regional cooperation in fighting illegal migration and human trafficking, police cooperation, the fight against corruption, and an enhanced judicial cooperation.

Alin Petrache is the new president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee. Petrache is the president of the Romanian Rugby Federation. Alin Petrache, who is also a deputy in Romania’s parliament, will be appointed for a two-year term in office. His contenders were Octavian Bellu, a gymnastics coach of outstanding merit, who earned an entry in the Book of Records for his achievements, and multiple Olympic champion Elisabeta Lipa, who was declared the world’s best rower of the 20th century. Petrache will be replacing Octavian Moraru, who has been at the helm of the Committee since 2004.
