DAY May 28th was the Day of the Romanians Around the World celebrated every year in the last Sunday of May through a series of cultural events staged in Romania and abroad. According to statistics over 2 million Romanians have found legal employment abroad, mostly in EU countries. The largest Romanian communities are in Spain and Italy, countries, which on Sunday saw cultural events aimed at marking this special day. Numerous Romanian students, artists and teachers from abroad convened in Bucharest on Sunday to participate in a seminar entitled “The Romanian Language closer to home”. In her address, the Minister of the Romanians Around the World, Andreea Pastarnac has emphasized the state support to the Romanian schools abroad so that they may keep their linguistic identity. In a message on this occasion, Romanian president Klaus Iohannis said he wished the Romanians living outside the country back each other and get involved in making decisions that can change their lives.
ROWING The Romanian women’s eight on Sunday walked away with gold from the European Rowing Championships in Racice, the Czech Republic. Also on Sunday the Romanian double became the competition’s gold medallist while the Romanian men’s four stepped onto the second step of the podium. Romania has sent to Racice its largest delegation in the past 12 years, being represented by no less than 39 athletes.
FOOTBALL FC Voluntari, a football side from southern Romania have won the finals of Romania’s Football Cup for the first time in the club’s history. On Saturday night in Ploiesti, southern Romania, Voluntari secured a 5-3 win against Astra Giurgiu following the penalty shootout. FC Voluntari will further take on FC Viitorul in Romania’s Supercup.
MARATHON Romanian-born athlete Raphael Igrisianu, who has been living in Germany for the past 20 years and who holds the world record of running with a basketball, on Saturday won the International Marathon in Sibiu, central Romania. He covered the distance in two hours and 52 minutes in support for a cultural project aimed at educating children through music. Igrisianu has so far run in 60 international marathons being one of the best-known Romanian marathoners. 32 hundred people from Romania and abroad ran in the Sibiu marathon race.
