Romania's president meets in Bucharest Bulgarian counterpart on a state visit; Lord Mayor of London Andrew Parmley visits Romania

BUCHAREST — Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and Bulgarian President Rumen Radev took part today in the opening of a business forum, which they said was meant to stimulated economic cooperation. On Wednesday, the two heads of state had already discussed increasing relationships in the economy, escpecially in areas such as energy and transportation. Iohannis told his counterpart that Romania was ready to share with Bulgaria its experience in combatting corruption. In turn, Radev said that a secure outer EU border needs Romania and Bulgaria within the Schengen space. The two presidents analyzed more concrete means of promoting common EU interests and objectives, considering that Bulgaria and Romania will be holding the half-year presidency of the European Council, in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Iohannnis and Radev spoke in favor of a strong transatlantic relationship, and concern for security in the Black Sea area.
BUCHAREST — Lord Mayor of London, Andrew Parmley, visits Romania and Thursday and Friday, with the purpose of strengthening ties between the two capitals. He referred to Bucharest as an area where banking, legal consultancy and financial services were in continual development. Parmley will meet government and business leaders, as well as representatives of agencies in charge of commerce, to discuss closer ties between Bucharest and London. Talks will also cover means by which Britain can support large scale infrastructure and energy projects in Romania. The visit comes as London seeks to expand its international presence in finances and consultancy.
WEATHER -In Romania, the heat wave is intensifying, and will cover most of the country. The heat index will be over 80 in the southwest, south and east of the country. Skies will be variable, with locally overcast skies, flash thunderstorms, and even hail. Strong winds are expected in the western half of the country, with storm conditions occasionally. Maximum temperatures will be between 29 and 39 degrees Celsius. In Bucharest, the noon reading was 32 degrees. The National Meteorology Administration said that this may be the hottest July on record. A code yellow alert for very hot weather is in effect in several counties, and several other counties in the southwest are under code orange alert. For Friday, meteorologists are considering a code red alert for the south and southwest. Interior Minister Carmen Dan said 840 ambulances and 270 special vehicles were available for emergencies nationwide.
TENNIS — Rain has disrupted on Wednesday evening the game between Romanian tennis star Simona Halep, number two in the world, and Bulgarian player Tsvetana Pironkova, 149th seeded, in the eighth finals of the tournament in Eastbourne. Weather permitting, the game will resume this evening, starting with the 7-6, 2-1 score in favor of Pironkova. Halep is the last Romanian left in the competition, after Pironkova defeated Monical Niculescu, while Sorana Cirstea was eliminated by Johanna Konta of the UK. The Eastbourne tournament is the last before Wimbledon.
