LEGAL – The Romanian government passed a new Administration code of law by emergency ordinance, claiming it imposes mechanisms that prevent institutional deadlock and simplifies regulations in public administration. The law also establishes procedures and deadlines for appointing government cabinet members in case of reshuffling or voiding of the position. The Presidency and the opposition have meted out criticism at the initiative.
BRUSSELS – Romanian Defense Minister Gabriel Les takes part between June 25- 27 in Brussels in a series of official activities, such as the meeting of his NATO member state counterparts, the global anti-ISIS coalition. Minister Les also meets his counterparts from Georgia and France. On Tuesday, he attended the celebration occasioned by the 15th anniversary of the European Defense Agency, where he emphasized the excellent relationship that the agency had with the Romanian rotating presidency of the Council of the EU. The defense agency was set up in 2004 in Brussels as a joint government agency of the Council of the EU. The agency brings together all EU member states except Denmark.
LONDON — Romanian tennis player, the world’s number seven Simona Halep has got through to the round 16 of the WTA tennis tournament in Eastbourne, Great Britain, an event with nearly one million dollars up for grabs. Halep snatched a 6-2, 6-nil win over Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh. Halep’s next round-of-16 fixture is the match against Slovenia’s Polona Hercog, coming straight from the qualifiers. We recall this past Tuesday Hercog outclassed Pauline Parmentier of France. Head-to-heads has revealed a 1-all score between Halep and Hercog. We recall Hercog defeated Halep in the ITF tournament in Sofia in 2009, while Halep defeated Hercog this year, in the third round of the tournament in Miami.
FLAG — National Flag Day is being celebrated in Bucharest and other cities with a series of ceremonies, including military parades. National Flag Day was instituted in 1998 by law. The day of June 26 was picked for the day on which the tricolor flag was made the national symbol in the 1848 revolution.
SPORTS — Romanian athletes Catalin Chirila and Victor Mihalachi won the gold in the canoe C2 1,000 meter event on Wednesday at the European Games in Minsk. Another gold was won by Laura Georgeta Coman in the 10 m air rifle event. Two silver medals were claimed by Dacian Barna and Andreea Bogati in the mixed pair in aerobics, as well as by the pair Ovidiu Ionescu/ Bernadette Szocs in table tennis in the mixed doubles event. Four bronze medals were brought in by sambo, with Daniela Poroineanu in the 56-kilogram category, Anda Mihaela Valvoi in the 64-kilogram category and Alina-Petronela Paunescu in the 80 plus category, as well as by the aerobics group. Romania has sent 123 athletes to the European championships in Minsk, between June 21 and 30.
