BRUSSELS — European leaders meet today in Brussels in a Eurozone summit in expanded format, attended by Romanian president Klaus Iohannis. Member state heads of state and government are discussing a closer cooperation in the Economic and Monetary Union, as well as establishing financing sources for the convergence and competitiveness budget within the Eurozone. Leaders will also be debating economic perspectives in Europe. Yesterday in the European Council, EU leaders did not reach an agreement on top appointments within the community, and have set June 30th as the date for the crisis summit. Ahead of the European Council, Klaus Iohannis said that the Romanian presidency of the Council of the European Union was a success, with a very good roster.



5 G — Romania joined the 12 developed states that have introduced 5G strategies in mobile telephony, which greatly increases rates of data transfer for mobile devices. A decision to this end was made in yesterdays government meeting, upon proposal by the Ministry of Communications. The ministry said in a press release that the 5G strategy for Romania was the object of wider public debate, including proposals from industry and experts. In principle, Romania wants to launch such networks next year, with 5G coverage of all urban centers and the main roadways by 2025. it is estimated that this new technology will create over 250.000 jobs in Romania, with benefits amounting to 5 billion Euro.



FOOTBALL – Romania’s national under-21 football side will today take on England while France is up against Croatia, in Group C of the European Under 21 Football Championship underway in Italy and San Marino. Our footballers made their debut on Tuesday with a 4-1 win against Croatia, while France secured a 2-1 win against England. This is Romania’s second participation in a final tournament after the one Bucharest hosted in 1998. Winners of the three main groups will qualify for the semifinals along with the best football side on the second position. The finals match has been scheduled for June 30th.



HANDBALL – Lots have today been drawn in Tokyo for the four groups of the World’s Women Handball Championships due to unfold between November 30th and December 15th. Romania’s national side has been included in Group C together with Hungary, Spain, Montenegro, Senegal and Kazakhstan. The first three sides in these groups will qualify for the two main groups of the competition. Japan, as a host country, France, the world defending champions, Romania, Russia and the Netherlands (thanks to their good results in the European Championship) have directly qualified for the final tournament.



BLOCKCHAIN — Bucharest on Friday and Saturday hosts a conference dedicated to innovative technology in Southeast Europe. The Blockhain Summit is an event organized by the Romanian Ministry of Communications, in partnership with the blockchain industry in Romania, with participation from the EU. The conference brings together representatives of the public sector, decision makers, developers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and local and European innovators. The main topics for the summit are identifying and analyzing the best case studies for implementing blockchain technology, supply and demand, enhancing dialog between government regulators and the private sector, promoting local expertise, and exchange of information between investors and start-ups.



FITS — Dundu, a giant doll made in 2006 in Germany, is on display for the Sibiu International Theater Festival, in support of shows this weekend. The name of the doll comes from the German du und du (you and you), representative of its role of bridging cultures. The troupe operating the doll uses live music and its extensive theater experience to offer an exceptional interactive visual show. Over 60 shows are scheduled in Sibiu for the 8th day of the festival, with a fado concert and a gospel recital in addition to theater plays.
