NATO — NATO has again called on Russia to observe the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and destroy by August 2 the new missiles. The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, fresh from the meeting of the NATO — Russia Council, that the treaty could be saved if Russia observed it. Otherwise, there will be serious consequences in relation to arms control. Washington has set August 2 as the deadline for Moscow to comply with the request, otherwise the treaty will be deemed as expired. The defense ministers of the NATO member countries decided last week that the Alliance will respond to Russia’s actions with coordinated, balanced and defensive measures.
Tennis — The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep (7WTA) on Friday defeated Byelorussian Victoria Azarenka (40 WTA) 6-3, 6-1 in the 3rd round of the Wimbledon torunament. A former world leader, Halep is the only Romanian player left in the women’s singles. In the doubles the pair made up of Monica Niculescu – Irina Begu will carry on the competition after they defeated 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 the pair Daria Kasatkina (Russia)/Anett Kontaveit (Estonia). In the second round the Romanian pair will be up against Xinyun Han (China)/Oksana Kalaşnikova (Georgia). In the men’s doubles, the Romanian Horia Tecau and the Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer qualified to the 3rd round where they will play against Fabrice Martin (France) and Hugo Nys (Monaco).
