UDMR In Romanian capital Bucharest, the
national Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) and the Parliamentary
Group of National Minorities are today expected to sign the national political agreement
for the consolidation of Romania’s European progress, proposed by Romanian
president Klaus Iohannis. On June 13th the head of the Romanian
state and the leaders of the main political parties PNL, USR, PMP and Pro
Romania signed the document. The ruling PSD and ALDE have refused to sign the agreement
because some proposals made by the two parties were not accepted by the
president.

UK The new Prime Minister of Britain is
expected to be announced today. The Conservatives are to choose between former
Foreign Minister Boris Johnson and incumbent Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt. It
would be for the first time in history when the Prime Minister was elected by
party members and not by Parliament or voters. A spokeswoman for the community
Executive on Monday announced the European Commission is ready to establish
working relations with any new British Prime Minister. The United Kingdom is to
withdraw from the EU on October 31st.

PSD Leaders of PSD, the main ruling
party in Romania will today convene in Bucharest to choose their candidate for
the presidential election in autumn. This candidate is to be validated by the
Congress on August 3rd. Social Democratic leader Viorica Dancila on
Monday held talks with the head of ALDE, their coalition partner, Calin Popescu
Tariceanu and with Victor Ponta, leader of Pro Romania party, about supporting
a PSD candidate in the presidential race, but these talks ended in a deadlock.
In early July Dancila said that if the party asked her she might run for
president in November. Her main party contender would be Bucharest’s incumbent
mayor Gabriela Firea.

MEDALS Students from Romania have
walked away with two silver and three bronze medals from the 60th
International Mathematical Olympiad held in Bath, Britain over July 10th
and 22nd, the Romanian National Education Ministry has announced.
This is the most prestigious competition of this kind and was launched in 1959
upon the initiative of Romania’s Society of Mathematical Sciences, the first
edition being staged in Brasov, central Romania in a formula that included
seven countries. Romania has so far hosted this competition six times, the
latest being held in Cluj, north-western Romania, last year.

FOOTBALL Romania’s defending champions
CFR Cluj on Wednesday take on Maccabi Tel Aviv in a fixture counting towards
the Champions League’s second preliminary round. On Thursday, three other
Romanian sides are playing in Europa League’s preliminary round. Winners of
Romania’s Cup, Viitorul Constanta are up against KAA Gent of Belgium,
vice-champions FCSB are facing Armenian side Alashkert FC while CSU Craiova are
pitted against Hungary’s Honved Budapest. The return games are scheduled next
week.
