FESTIVAL NeverSea, the biggest music festival ever held on the Romanian Black Sea coast, and the only suchlike event held on a beach has come to an end. The city of Constanta, on the Romanian Black Sea coast, has this morning seen the last performances of this three-day event, which brought together over 150 thousand spectators. The festival included performances by great names of electronic music, such as Tiesto, Fatboy Slim, Rita Ora, Dua Lipa and Jason Derulo.
DRILL Romania’s naval forces are participating as of today until July 22nd in the multinational exercise SABER GUARDIAN 17, which involves the participation of 745 soldiers, 10 warships, 12 boats and 18 combat vehicles. Saber Guardian, the biggest multinational exercise in modern history Romania is part of, is being held in three allied states, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. 21 integrated and connected exercises are to be held in shooting ranges and army bases over the Romanian territory, and they will be attended by 25 thousand troops and military equipment from 22 countries. Saber Guardian 17, planned by the United States European Command and headed by the US land forces in Europe is meant to prove the allies’ response and deterrence capabilities in a collective defence scenario, a communiqué by the Defence Ministry in Bucharest has announced.
VISIT As of today, Romania’s Prime Minister Mihai Tudose is paying a two-day formal visit to Brussels, where he is accompanied by the Minister Delegate for European Affairs, Victor Negrescu. The Romanian official is expected to convey a message that Romania will fulfill all the commitments assumed previously and wants to have a good cooperation with European partners. The Romanian Prime Minister’s agenda includes talks with high-ranking EU officials, including the European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker and Frans Timmermans, the first vice-president of the European Commission. Tudose will also be seeing several European commissioners, including the one for regional policy Corina Cretu.
DEFICIT In the first five months of 2017 Romania’s trade deficit stood at 4.5 billion euros, 1.8% higher than the similar period of last year, the National Institute for Statistics (INS) announced on Monday. In that period, imports and exports rose by 11% and 12% respectively. Trade exchanges with EU countries, both in imports and exports, stay at 75%. In the first five months of the year, Romania exported 19.5 billion euros worth of goods to EU countries, while imports stood around 23 billion.
TENNIS Romania’s best tennis player, Simona Halep, is today up against Viktoria Azarenka of Byelorussia in the round of 16 of the grand slam tournament of Wimbledon. We recall that Halep is Romania’s only representative in the Wimbledon’s single contest. A pair made up of Romanian Monica Niculescu and Hao-Ching Chan of Taiwan will today be playing the Brazilian-Croatian pair Haddad Maia/Konjuh in the ladies’ doubles, while Romanian Florin Mergea and Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan will be playing Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Marcelo Melo of Brazil in the gentlemen’s doubles.
