A fire broke out on Friday morning at the Matei Balș Institute in
Bucharest, one of the biggest centers treating COVID patients. The fire
engulfed four wards where patients suffering from medium and severe COVID
conditions were being treating on oxygen. Three patients died in the fire on
the spot, and a fourth died after failing to respond to CPR maneuvers.
Over 100 patients have been evacuated and transferred
to other medical units in the capital city.
This is the second major fire at a hospital
in Romania within the course of a several months, after in Novembe last year a fire
that razed the ICU unit at the Piatra
Neamț County Hospital, killing 10 people.
