The leaders of the ruling Social Liberal Union in Romania are today resuming negotiations on a new government structure. The main topic to be debated is the Liberals’ proposal for Klaus Iohannis, the Liberal mayor of the city of Sibiu, whose nomination has already been validated within the ruling coalition, to take the position of deputy prime minister.

The EU Commissioner for Justice, Citizenship and Fundamental, Rights Viviane Reding, and the EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, Laszlo Andor, are today taking part in Brussels, alongside over 100 mayors and representatives of the local authorities, in a conference organised by the European Commission and the Committee of the Regions. Participants will discuss the impact of intra-EU mobility at local level and exchange best practices in order to maximise beneficial impacts and respond to potential inclusion challenges.

The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes in Romania has required the Prosecutors’ Office with the High Court of Cassation and Justice to prosecute a former commander of a forced labour colony, accused of having committed crimes against humanity. According to the Institute, Florian Cormos, aged 87, a former commander of the forced labour colony in Cernavoda, in south-eastern Romania, between December 1952 and April 1953, instated an extermination regime, that included torture and food and healthcare deprivation. Florian Cormos is believed to be guilty of the death of 115 counterrevolutionaries, a name given by communists to the opponents of the regime.

The European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dacian Ciolos, is today attending in Bucharest a meeting with representatives of the Romanian Association of Communes, to discuss about current opportunities in agriculture and the rural area under the Common Agricultural Policy for 2014-2020. Also tackled will be the steps to be taken for the proper implementation of the future rural development program.
