The leaders of the ruling Social Liberal Union in Bucharest will continue to negotiate on Tuesday a new government structure, after the Liberal mayor of the central Romanian city of Sibiu, Klaus Iohannis, has been proposed for the positions of interior minister and deputy prime minister. The National Integrity Agency, however, signalled the fact that Iohannis must first resign his position as mayor, before being appointed prime minister. On Monday the leaders of the Social Liberal Union discussed about the Liberals’ nominations for the ministries of economy, health and finance.
The liberalisation, in the upcoming months, of the EU entry visas for the Moldovan citizens is a clear proof that the country’s bid for the European Union is benefiting the entire Moldovan society, Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean said. Corlatean chaired on Monday, in Brussels, the meeting of the Group for the European Action of the Republic of Moldova, attended by 20 European foreign ministers. The guest of honour was the Moldovan Foreign Minister, Natalia Gherman. High on the meeting’s agenda were the commitments Moldova made as part of its EU integration process and also the country’s internal reforms.
The Romanian Senate adopted on Monday, in a plenary sitting, a declaration in support of Georgia’s efforts to join the EU and NATO. The declaration was adopted after a meeting between the Senate Chairman, Crin Antonescu and the head of the Georgian Parliament, David Usupashvili.
Five Romanian athletes will compete on Tuesday in the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Among them are Florin Daniel Pripici, Paul Pepene and Timea Sara who will take part in the cross-country skiing competition, biathlonist Eva Tofalvi, and Raluca Nicoleta Stramaturaru in the luge event. Romania’s Olympic team is made up of 24 athletes. Romania won only one medal in the history of its participation in the Winter Olympics, in 1968, when the countrys bobsleigh crew made up of Nicolae Neagu and Ion Panturu walked away with a silver medal.
