The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania has voiced concern at the way in which the Government in Bucharest adopted a series of measures that impact the business environment directly. The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania, made up of 350 companies, disapproves both the fiscal measures taken by the Government, without having consulted the business environment, and the attempts to pass in an improper manner, without previous debates, new laws in the field of fighting corruption and the conflict of interests. The investors’ stance comes a few days after the amendments to the Criminal Code by Romanian parliamentarians, stirred criticism both domestically and abroad.
The Romanian Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin is paying a 3-day visit to the neighbouring Republic of Moldova, starting on Monday. He will take part, in Chisinau, in a series of informal consultations ahead of a Regional Conference for Europe of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, due in Bucharest in the spring of 2014. Minister Constantin will hold talks with the Deputy Regional Representative of the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, Tony Alonzi, and with the organization’s future representative Vladimir Rakhmanin. The Romanian minister will have a meeting with his Moldovan counterpart Vasile Bumacov.
Ukraine’s pro-European opposition has again called on people to take to the streets this weekend in protest at president Victor Ianukovici’s refusal to sign the Association Accord with the European Union. One of the opposition’s leaders, boxer Vitali Kliciko, after Friday’s meeting between the power and the opposition, has said that their demands, namely early parliamentary and presidential elections and the replacement of the current Prime Minister Mikola Azarov, have remained ananswered.
Actor Radu Beligan, a living legend of Romanian theatre, has today turned 95. Also today he celebrates 75 years of artistic activity. On Sunday, Radu Beligan will receive from the Guiness Book of Records representatives, the title of longest living actor that still performs on stage.
Romania’s national handball team on Sunday in Novi Sad will be up against Poland in the round of sixteen of the World Championship held in Serbia. On Friday evening the Romanians beat the Czech Republic, 29-23 in the last match of group D, while Germany defeated Hungary by 1 goal. In the group D, Germany ranks first with 10 points, followed by Romania with 8 points, the Czech Republic with 4 points, Tunisia with 2 points and Australia with 0 points. Romania has so far won 3 world medals: gold in 1962, and 2 silver in 1973 and 2005 respectively. Also, it is the only country that has taken part in all final tournaments of the World Championships from 1957 on.
