The Romanian Defence Minister, Mircea Duşa, will attend on Saturday in the Black Sea port of Constanta the ceremonies organised by the Navy Chief of Staff on the Open Doors Day. On this occasion, technical exhibitions will be organised, and military vessels will be open for visitors. The educational offer of the Romanian Naval Forces will also be presented on this occasion, by means of interactive workshops and presentation stands.
The Romanian students having taken part in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics held in Indonesia between July 27th and August the 4th have won 2 silver medals, six bronze medals and two honourable mentions, the Romanian Education Ministry announced on Friday. Romania took part in this year’s competition with 2 teams, all the 10 members being awarded. This placed Romania on the 5th position out of the 41 participating nations. Attending the competition for the first time, the UK team was coordinated by the former Romanian Olympiad participant Sandor Kruk.
The European Commission Friday officially approved the extension, until June 2016, of the aid for European farmers struggling with the effects of the Russian ban on foodstuff imports from the EU. The support measures for the vegetable, fruit and dairy sectors, were approved one year ago, in response to Moscow’s decision to suspend the imports of European products. For the dairy sector, the measures include public procurement and aid for private warehousing. As regards the fruit and vegetables, European farmers will have their products taken over by charities and humanitarian organisations, or processed as animal food, compost or distillation. According to the EC, in late June Russia decided to extend the ban on European foodstuffs until 2016.
Romanian champions Steaua Bucharest will take on Norway’s Rosenborg Trondheim in the Europa League playoffs, according to the draw held on Friday in Nyon. Romania’s second team in this competition, Astra from Giurgiu will play against the Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. The games will be played on August the 20th, while the second leg is scheduled one week later. Rosenborg Trondheim, founded in 1917, has so far won 22 national championships, the last one in 2010, and 9 Norway Cups. The 48-year old club AZ Alkmaar has won two national titles, in 1981 and 2009. Steaua Bucharest was kicked out of the Champions’ League in the third round by Serbia’s Partizan Belgrade.
