Romania continues to deal with an unprecented heat wave; The Untold music festival in Cluj features over 200 artists

BUCHAREST — Romania faces another day of sweltering heat, with temperatures up to 39 degrees. 15 counties in the west are under code orange alert, and the rest of the country is under code yellow alert. The noon reading in Bucharest was 34 degrees. The heat wave is anticipated to continue. Meteorologists announced temperatures of up to 42 degrees over the weekend. Emergency measures have been put in place in all major cities. The national railroad company imposed restrictions on rail traffic, with delays of up to 2 hours. Vehicles heavier than 7.5 tons cannot circulate on road in counties under code orange alert. Several more countries have imposed alerts for high temperatures. The Romanian Foreign Ministry has issued warnings for travel in Montenegro, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina.
BUCHAREST — An arrest warrant is out for Romanian Businessman Puiu Popoviciu after fleeing his home on the day he was supposed to go to jail for seven years, after a definitive sentence in a corruption case. The Romanian police will issue a European warrant, since there are indications he left Romania as early as June. He is going to be prosecuted separatly in another related case.
FESTIVAL — The third edition of the Untold electronic music festival, the largest of its kind in the country, starts today in Cluj, in northwestern Romania. It features over 200 artists. Organizers announced that this years edition represents an investment worth around 10 million Euro. In 2016, at the second edition, the event was attended by 300,000 spectators, with 150 artists performing.
FOOTBALL — Romanian vice-champions in football, FCSB, formerly Steaua Bucharest, qualified to the play-offs of the Champions League after defeating on Wednesday, away from home, Czech side Viktoria Plzen, 4-1. In the first leg, they tied 2-all. Champions FC Viitorul missed going to the play-offs after a crushing defeat handed out by contenders APOEL Nikosia, 4-0. At home, in the first leg, Viitorul had won 1-0. Three Romanian teams have games scheduled today away from home, in the decisive round of the third Europa League preliminary tour. Dinamo tied 1-all against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, Astra Giurgiu had a blank tie against Ukrainian side FK Oleksandria, while Universitatea Craiova was narrowly defeated by one goal by Italian side AC Milan.
WASHINGTON — WTA 29th-placed Romanian tennis player Monica Nicuescu has got through to the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Washington, with 226,750 USD in prize money. Niculescu defeated Japan’s Nao Nibino in three sets. Today Niculescu takes on her fellow Romanian, WTA 134th-placed, 23-year old Patricia Tig, for a place in the quarterfinals. The confrontation between the two comes as an absolute first. Another Romanian, WTA 2nd-placed and first seed in Washington, Simona Halep, faces WTA 115th-placed Colombian challenger Maria Duque Marino, also today.
