TENNIS Six Romanian tennis players, including the worlds number one, Simona Halep, will be playing on the main draw of the US Open, the years last Grand Slam tournament. Halep, who is also the competitions odds-on favourite, will be up against Estonian Kaia Kanepi, while Mihaela Buzarnescu will be playing Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic. Sorana Carstea has been pitched against US challenger Alison Riske, while Irina Begu will be up against another American player, Jennifer Brady. Ana Bogdan will meet Czech Marie Bouzkova and Monica Niculescu will do her best against Israeli player Julia Glushko. Romanias single representative in the mens contest, Marius Copil will be up against seventh-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia.
DIPLOMACY Romanias Foreign Ministry is staging the Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy. The event, which is due to begin on Monday, will be unfolding under the motto: Diplomacy – a pillar of centennial Romania. According to the Romanian Foreign Ministry the special guest to this edition is German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, whose presence confirms the good level of the bilateral relations. The event also involves the participation of Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu, the Minister Delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu as well as representatives of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Bucharest. The main topics will be Romanias mandate at the helm of the EU Council in the first half of the next year, bilateral and strategic relations, regional cooperation, eastern vicinity, the UN and economic diplomacy. The meeting is due to end on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry sources have announced.
ProEtnica Over 600 representatives of the national minorities participated in the 16th edition of the ProEtnica Intercultural Festival, which ended in Sighisoara, central Romania on Sunday. During the event, which had been staged under the European Year of Cultural Heritage, almost 50 folk ensembles and representative groups for 20 national minorities in Romania performed on the stages of Sighisoara, the only inhabited medieval town in Europe. ProEtnica has also included a science section, film screenings, art exhibitions mounted by artists belonging to various ethnic groups as well as artisan workshops. Radio Romania is a media partner of the event.
MIGRATION 33 Iranian citizens, of which 11 minors, have been captured while trying to illegally cross Romanias border with Hungary. According to the General Border Police Inspectorate (IGPF), the Iranian citizens, who have been found on board of a truck, have admitted their intention to travel to Western Europe.
