HEAT The weather remains extremely hot in southern, central and eastern Romania in the following hours. A code orange alert for extreme heat will remain in place on Saturday for two counties in southern Romania, where temperatures are expected to soar to 39 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorms are expected in the country’s western regions on Saturday night with temperatures ranging between 30 and 38 degrees Celsius.
CONTAMINATED EGGS The European Commission announced on Friday that 15 EU countries, Romania included, as well as two non-EU countries, Switzerland and Hong Kong, are affected by the scandal caused by the eggs contaminated with a toxic substance known as fipronil. The Commission announced that in late September it would summon a meeting of the field ministers and national services of consumer protection for talks on the issue. Tensions mounted between Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany after fipronil, a toxic insecticide had been found in several batches of eggs. Millions of eggs have been withdrawn from European markets in order to avoid contamination. In Timis, western Romania, inspectors from the country’s Food Safety Agency on Thursday seized one ton of fipronil-contaminated liquid yolk imported from Germany.
PROJECT The Minister for the Romanians all over the World Andreea Pastarnac presented in Piatra Neamt, northeastern Romania on Friday a campaign she launched for the support of the Romanian workers abroad. At the end of 2016, the county of Neamt was ranking first in terms of citizens working abroad for a long period of time, 70 thousand, according to Radio Romania. The campaign targeting the Romanians abroad, starts with a pilot project that has already been implemented in the counties of Botosani and Suceava and will be extended to other regions. The largest communities of Romanians abroad are in Italy and Spain.
INFLATION The annual rate of inflation was 1.4% in July, up 0.85% as compared to the previous month, according to the National Institute for Statistics. The average consumer goods price rate in the last 12 months, August 2016- July 2017, as compared to the previous period stands at 0.1%. We recall that the National Bank of Romania has reviewed its forecast of inflation for the end of this year to 1.9%, as compared to its previous figure, of 1.6%. For the end of 2018, the National Bank estimates a rate of inflation of 3.2%, with an expected rate of 3.5% for early 2019.
