VISIT A delegation of 8 US Congress members, Republicans and Democrats, is today having talks with Romanian MPs in Bucharest. Earlier they held talks with interim president, Ilie Bolojan, and said they were ‘satisfied’ with his clarifications concerning the cancellation of the presidential election last year. The talks have been described by political sources as ‘extremely good, friendly, beyond classic diplomacy’ and the Washington representatives ‘had a friendly and open attitude’. The US officials have explained that the USA’s strategic-military policy remains unchanged. They US congressmen said they wish the continuation and strengthening of the US-Romania strategic partnership adding they would support Romania concerning its inclusion in the Visa Waiver Programme. Regarding the war in Ukraine, the US officials said they appreciated Romania’s position and understood the issues specific to the Eastern Flank. The US officials will also be holding talks with the country’s Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu.
MEDAL Romanian athlete Cristian Luca became silver medalist in the 55 kg category of the snatch event of the European Weightlifting Championships in Chisinau, the Republic of Moldova. Two days into the competition, Romania’s delegation has reaped three gold medals all won by Mihaela Cambei in the 49 kg category, a silver medal won by Cristian Luca and two bronze won by Ioana Madalina Miron and Cosmina Pana. Romania is being represented in the aforementioned competition by 15 athletes.
COUNCIL The head of the Romanian diplomacy, Emil Hurezeanu, on Monday participated in the proceedings of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, which brings together Foreign Ministers from the EU member countries. On this occasion the Romanian minister pleaded for continuing pressure on Moscow through the adoption of a new package of restrictive measures. Concerning the aggression of Russia against Ukraine, the Romanian Foreign Minister reiterated the firm support for a fair and durable peace, backed by solid security guarantees with support from the United States and the involvement of the European countries. The Romanian minister also underlined the need for the continuation and consolidation of the multidimensional support for Ukraine and reiterated Bucharest’s support for advancing the EU-accession talks of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
DELEGATION A delegation made up of 8 members of the US Congress, Republicans and Democrats is today meeting in Bucharest President Ilie Bolojan, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and Romanian MPs. The politicians in Bucharest say that the visit to Romania of a US Congress delegation represents a message of strategic partnership between the two countries. The US delegation arrived last night in Romania from Chisinau, the Republic of Moldova, an ex-Soviet, Romanian-speaking country, where they held talks with the country’s pro-Western leader, Maia Sandu. The Moldovan president thanked for the support provided by the United States along the years for streamlining the country’s public institutions, the consolidation of energy resilience and its defence sector.
ENERGY Vulnerable energy consumers in Romania will be protected after the present price-cap scheme expires on July 1st, the incumbent Energy Minister, Sebastian Burduja, told the participants in the Energy Forum in Bucharest. The Romanian official said that until that time, the price-cap scheme in force must be updated so that all those who need this support from the Romanian state may be able to benefit from it. We recall that the present price-cap regulation for gas has been extended until April 1, next year.
