Romania-Estonia. The Romanian prime minister Viorica Dancila was
received on Saturday by the Estonian president Kersti Kaljulaid on the second
day of her visit to this Baltic state. The two officials talked about the stage
of bilateral relations, topical EU and security issues and regional cooperation
formats. Prime minister Dancila said there is potential to consolidate
bilateral trade exchanges and presented the conclusions of her talks on this
subject with Estonia’s prime minister Juri Ratas. She underlined the need to
enhance connectivity between the two economies through improved mutual
knowledge and the development of infrastructure and of transport connections. Estonia’s
president welcomed Romania’s becoming a sponsoring nation of the NATO Cooperative
Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn, to
which Romania is to contribute two experts. Today, the prime
ministers of Romania and Estonia are to inaugurate the Tallinn-Constanta flight,
which they hope will contribute to developing tourism and trade exchanges
between the two countries. Viorica Dancila and Juri Ratas will be among the
first passengers of this new flight. On Sunday, they will attend the opening of
Estonia’s honorary consulate in Constanta.

Congress. The People’s Movement Party in opposition is today appointing
a new president, including a new leadership, during an extraordinary congress. Traian
Basescu, a senator in the current Parliament and former president of Romania
between 2004 and 2014, is to step down as leader of the party. The main goal of
the next leadership is to prepare the party for upcoming euro-parliamentary and
presidential elections of 2019 and the parliamentary elections of 2020. MP and
current executive president Eugen Tomac is the only candidate to take over the
leadership of the party. He says his plan is to pursue the same direction
initiated by Traian Basescu.

Republic of Moldova. The Republic of Moldova will request at the United
Nations the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the break-away region of
Transdniester, in the east of the country. A draft resolution in this sense
will be debated on the 22nd of June. Around 1,000 Russian military from
the former 14th Soviet Army are currently in Transdniester to guard
arms and ammunition stores, as well as 500 peace troops deployed in the
security area at the Dniester. 15,000 troops subordinated to the separatist
regime in Tiraspol are also in the area. Transdniester broke away with Chisinau
following an armed conflict in 1992.

US tariffs. China will
respond in kind to the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, say the
authorities in Beijing, who have denounced the trade war launched by
Washington. US president Donald Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on 50 billion
dollars worth of imports from China. He says the US can no longer tolerate the
loss of technology and intellectual property due to unfair economic practices
and has warned that he will take additional measures if Beijing retaliates.

Weather. The weather is becoming unstable in
Romania, with torrential rain and storms expected across the country with the
exception of the south-east and the north-west. The amount of precipitation is
expected to reach 25 litres per square metre and even 40 litres in some cases.
Hail storms have also been forecast. According to the authorities, extreme
weather has caused damage in dozens of localities in 16 counties around Romania
in the last 24 hours.
