Today we take a trip to the county of Covasna, which has great tourist potential, because of its picturesque scenery and its rich mineral water resources. Covasna county also holds pride of place thanks to its historical art and architecture monuments. Today we shall mainly be focusing on spa tourism and relaxation, but also on opportunities to include the individual spa treatment scheme into an active holiday.

The executive manager of a hotel compound in Covasna, Claudia Braghesiu, will tell us more about the resort: “Covasna spa resort, also dubbed the spa of the 1,000 health springs or the heart spa, thanks to the abundance and variety of procedures for patients with cardiovascular conditions, lies at the center of Romania. Therefore, it is easy to reach the spa from regions of the country. Due to its specific geological conditions, Covasna has a wide range of mineral water springs, as well as natural carbon dioxide emissions, known as moffets. The healing qualities of the waters in Covasna had been documented as early as the beginning of the 17th century, during the rule of Michael the Brave.

Covasna boasts four well-equipped mountain tracks. One such track is the one linking Covasna to Lacauti. Lacauti is a weather station on the mountain peak with the same name, at an altitude of 1,777 meters. It is roughly a seven –hour track and it is marked with a blue point. However, the executive manager of a hotel compound in Covasna, Claudia Braghesiu, invites us to take full advantage of the healing properties of the mineral waters.

Claudia Braghesiu: Tourists benefit from a package that includes accommodation, meal and treatment. We have an offer of our own, known as the healthy heart offer. It has been launched on the market for more than 15 years now, it is very popular, and since it is our own offer, each year we try to promote it as much as possible. Apart from the accommodation and meal services, the tourist also benefits from three treatment sessions. These are a carbon dioxide bath, a moffet and an electrotherapy or kinetotherapy procedure. Procedures are included in the main package. Of course, tourists can opt for additional treatment.

Covasna towns most famous attraction is the Devils Swamp, lying right at the center of the town. Claudia Braghesiu tells us more about it: It is a renowned cold bath, also known as the Devils Mud. It is an interesting hydro-geological phenomenon that occurred as a result of tectonic movements caused by the volcanic eruptions in the regions of Harghita and Calimani, eight million years ago. A couple of years ago the objective was capitalized on through a project, and has become one of the towns important tourist assets. Apart from the Devils Swamp, placed in the city center are mineral water springs, tasting differently and having various concentrations, for various conditions. The narrow gauge train is also a tourist attraction. “

We asked Claudia Braghesiu about the health conditions that can be cured in Covasna: First off, we treat cardiovascular conditions, digestive tract conditions, hepato-biliary conditions and associated diseases. The treatment of cardiovascular diseases has a success rate of 75% to 80. Also, the success rate in the case of digestive tract conditions is 10%, and 5% in the case of the locomotive and endocrine conditions. We also treat metabolic and nutrition disorders, as well as neurasthenics. Apart from treatments with natural mineral waters, tourists can also have negative ionized air therapy. Of the cardiovascular diseases, I should like to mention the most relevant ones, that can be treated here: ischemic cardiomyopathy, secondary mitral insufficiency, high blood pressure, post-stroke recovery, varicose ulcer and varicose veins.

Balvanyos Spa is another renowned resort in Covasna County. It lies in a very quiet area, at an altitude ranging from 840 to 950 meters. The healing properties of the waters in Balvanyos have been put to good uses for eighty years now, since 1938. Thanks to the resorts tonic climate and thermal waters, cardiovascular conditions, rheumatism, obesity, depressive disorder and stress are treated here.

Travel agent Monika Karakas gives us details about the resorts tourist potential: In Balvanyos, we have a lot of tourist attractions and options for accommodation, in guest houses and hotels. People who come here can choose between mountain and balneal tourism, since we have baths, moffets and also a SPA center. Close by one can find Europes only volcanic lake, the Saint Anne Lake, 10 kilometers from Balvanyos. It is also there that we have the Sulphur Grotto, Europes biggest natural cave. We also have many water springs, with therapeutic effects.

The offer of activities for tourists who want to have an active holiday is also rich. Of the tourist packages on offer, a good choice would be, for instance, an adventure ride on board a covered wagon in the Land of the Volcanoes. Rides are organized upon request, for two to four people, for a price of 37 Euros per day per person. It is a three-day programme. A lot of culinary events are staged in Covasna County, capitalizing on the local cuisine. The Sausages Parade, the Pigs Alms Festival, the Edible Flowers Festival, the Potatoes and the Hunting Festival are among the most familiar such events.
