Sabre fencer Bianca Pascu
The Georgian capital Tbilisi last week played host to the European Fencing Championships. The goal of the Romanian delegation was to obtain at least one medal at this competition. In the end, Romanian fencers won two of them.
On the first day of the competition, last Monday, Bianca Pascu won bronze in the sabre individual event, while on the final day of the competition, the Romanian team, made up of very young fencers, won the bronze medal in the team event. The Romanian sabre team was made up of Amalia Tataran, Greta Veres, Raluca Sbircia and Adela Danciu.
Following her excellent result at the European Fencing Championships, Radio Romania International has designated Bianca Pascu the Athlete of the Week. Pascu is a member of the Dinamo Club in Bucharest. She was born on June 13, 1988 in Brasov. She has been practicing fencing ever since she was 10. Her first noteworthy results came in 2008, when she won silver in the individual as well as in the nations' competition at the European Junior Championship in Gent. In 2011, at the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China, Bianca Pascu won the silver medal. This year, she finished third at the Fencing Grand Prix competition in Moscow earlier in June. Her result in Tbilisi is the best in her career so far. She is currently in the 13th place in the world ranking.
Following her outstanding achievement in Georgia, Bianca Pascu will be among the favourites at the World Fencing Championships hosted by the German city of Leipzig in July. Her goal is to win at least a medal. To prepare for the World Championships, she is training with the Romanian men's sabre team coached by Florin Zalomir.
