Romanian players in action at the Australian Open.
Raluca Olaru has reached the second round of the women's doubles at the Australian Open. Olaru and her doubles partner, the Ukrainian player Olga Savchuk, on Thursday defeated the Japanese-Porto Rican pair Naomi Osaka and Monica Puig in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Olaru and Savchuk will next face the 11th seeded American-Chinese pair Raquel Atawo and Yifan Xu, who defeated the all-Australian pair Jessica Moore and Storm Sanders in the first round in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Olaru is now Romania's only player still competing in the women's doubles in Melbourne. Monica Niculescu and her doubles partner, the American player Abigail Spears, lost on Wednesday to the Croat-German pair Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and Andrea Petkovic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. On Thursday, Irina Begu and her doubles partner Lara Arruabarrena of Spain were defeated by the US-Belgian pair Louisa Chirico and Elise Mertens in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Also on Thursday, Romania's Sorana Cirstea and Germany's Carina Witthoeft, seeded 15th at this tournament, lost to the Hungarian-Russian pair Timea Babos and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-4, 6-2.
On Friday, Romania's Horia Tecau and Florin Mergea reached the third round of the men's doubles in Melbourne. Tecau and his doubles partner Jean-Julien Rojer of Holland, a pair seeded 11th at the Australian Open, defeated the all-Dutch pair Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop, 6-3, 6-4. Florin Mergea and his doubles partner, the British player Dominic Inglot, seeded 16th in Melbourne, pulled off a hard-fought win over the all-French pair Julien Benneteau and Jeremy Chardy, whom they defeated in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6.
