A look at the latest sporting events
Romania's football champions, Astra Giurgiu have managed a sensational qualification for the Europa League. In the second leg's play-offs on Thursday the Romanian side clinched a one-nil win against English team West Ham United in London. The first game in Giurgiu, a week earlier, had ended in a one-all draw.
The hosts dominated the first part of the game on London Stadium missing several good chances, most of them denied by Astra's goalkeeper, Silviu Lung Jr. The game's first half thus ended with the visitors' upper hand after Astra's Daniel Niculae had fed Portuguese Filipe Teixeira and the latter fired home from inside the box. Romanian goalie Lung managed an excellent show in the second half of the game, which kept the score unchanged. Astra thus edged out the Hammers for the second year in a row. We recall that last year the Romanians managed a two-all draw in London and a 2-1 return win on home turf in the third preliminary round.
Romania has now two sides playing in Europa League. After having been eliminated from the Champions League's qualifiers, Steaua Bucharest will be playing in Europa League. We recall that last year no Romanian football team played in the European cups' groups.
