Romanian tennis player Marius Copil sustained a defeat by Swiss Roger Federer this past Sunday in the finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Switzerland, an event with 1,984,420 Euro in prize money. The world’s number three tennis player had an easy time grabbing a 7-6, 6-4 win. In Basel, Copil, who last week was 93rd-placed in the world rankings, had a trail including six wins in confrontations with better placed opponents.
Among them, the Croatian Marin Cilic, the world’s number 6, whom Copil eliminated in the round of 16, as well as Germany’s Alexander Zverev whom Copil defeated in the semifinals. For the Romanian tennis player it was the second men’s single finals he played in the ATP tournament. We recall that early into 2018 Copil played the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Sofia, where he was defeated by Bosnian challenger Mirza Basic. The notable performance in Switzerland earned Romania’s best male tennis player the 60th ranking in the ATP classification, that is 33 notches up as against his previous position.
