The latest in women’s handball, tennis, rugby, athletics and football.
Romania’s women’s handball team CSM Bucharest has got through to the Champions League quarterfinals, one round ahead of the conclusion of the main group stage. In Bucharest this Friday, CSM overpowered Slovenian champions Krim Ljubljana, 28-26. CSM now have 9 points on their record sheet and are 3rd placed in the second main group. The Romanian team has thus secured a place among the main group’s first four teams, so this coming Sunday’s away fixture against Danish contenders Team Esbjerg only matters for the quarterfinal scheme.
Next it’s news from tennis. The Romanian Horia Tecau won his first tournament in 2017. Pairing up with Dutch Jean Julien Rojer, this Saturday Tecau won the men’s doubles event in Dubai, a tournament with 2,429,150 USD in prize money. In the finals, Tecǎu and Rojer outperformed the Indian-Polish pair made of Rohan Bopanna and Marcin Matkowski, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3.
We move on to rugby. Also this Saturday, in Sochi, Romania’s national squad trounced Russia, 30-10. The fixture counted towards the third round of the Rugby Europe Championship. For the 2017 season of the competition, Romania has two more games to go, the one against Belgium in Brussels, on March 11, and a match against Georgia in Bucharest, on March 19.
The 34th edition of the European Athletics Indoor Championships was held in Belgrade this past weekend. The Romanian delegation was made up of 14 athletes. Of them, Ancuta Bobocel was the only one who reached the finals, in the 3,000m event. Bobocel came in the last-but-one place, the 11th, in the finals of the competition.
In football, this Sunday, the last three teams got through to the play-offs of the domestic League One. They are CFR Cluj, CSU Craiova and Dinamo Bucharest. The three teams joined Viitorul Constanţa, Steaua Bucharest and Astra Giurgiu, which have already secured their qualification ahead of the regular season’s last round. CFR Cluj outplayed Viitorul Constanta, 1-nil, Craiova defeated Gaz Metan Medias in Pitesti, also 1-nil, while in the southern Romanian town of Drobeta Turnu-Severin Dinamo won the game against Pandurii Targu Jiu, 2-nil. In Timisoara, western Romania, the local side Poli drew against Concordia Chiajna, 1-all on Saturday, and 1-all was also the score in the game pitting Steaua against ASA Targu Mures, on the National Arena in Bucharest.
