12 athletes are representing Romania in the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships underway in Doha, Qatar. Over 500 gymnasts are vying for one of the 42 medals, out of which 14 are gold. The competition also counts as a first leg in the qualifiers for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The objective of Romania’s male and female teams is to rank among the top 24 nations, which will also bring them qualification for the world championships in Stuttgart in 2019, a communiqué issued by the Romanian gymnastics federation reads. Romania’s best female gymnast is the 16-year old Denisa Golgota, winner of several medals in the European junior championships two years ago. Fans in Romania are also pinning their hopes on veteran Marian Dragulescu, multiple world and European champion and 3 times Olympic medalist.
