The Romanian women's handball team CSM Bucharest will face the Hungarian side Gyor in the Champions League's semifinals. The semifinal matches were drawn in Budapest on Tuesday. In the other semifinal, the Russian side Rostov-Don are to take on the Macedonian side Vardar Skopje. The matches will be hosted by the Hungarian capital city Budapest on May 12. The winners of the two matches will face each other in the Champions League's finals on May 13.
The Romanian team's opponents, Gyor, are the current holders of the Champions League title. CSM Bucharest and Gyor have already played each other in this season's main group stage. CSM Bucharest won 28-22 at home before losing 24-28 away.
In 2016, CSM Bucharest and Gyor played the Champions League final, also in Budapest. It was a dramatic match, which CSM won 29-26, after penalty shoot-outs. This was the only trophy CSM have ever won in an international competition. The Hungarian champions' record includes three trophies, which they won in 2013, 2014 and 2017. We recall that they played the Champions league final four times.
In last year's edition of the Champions League, CSM Bucharest came in third. They lost the semifinal against Vardar Skopje, 33-38, and then won the third-place match against Montenegro's Buducnost Podgorica, 26-20.
Also on Tuesday, the order of the EHF Cup final matches was drawn in Vienna. The Romanian side Municipal Sports Club Craiova take on the Norwegian side Vipers Kristiansand. The first leg is to be played in Norway on May the 5th or the 6th, while the return leg is scheduled in Craiova, on May 12th or 13th. Both teams are in their first European competition final. Craiova got this far after defeating Turkey's Kastamonu in the semifinals, while Vipers Kristiansand eliminated the Danish side Viborg.
