The latest action from Romanian tennis players in international tournaments.
Last weekend, the Romanian tennis player Horia Tecau won his first title this year. Together with his doubles partner, the Dutch player Jean-Julien Rojer, Tecau won the doubles tournament in Dubai worth 2,623,485 dollars. In the final, Tecau and Rojer defeated the American-Indian pair Jamie Cerretani and Leander Paes 6-2, 7-6. This is Tecau and Rojer's second consecutive title in Dubai.
The Indian Wells tournament, worth 8,648,508 dollars, has got under way in the United States. Romania's Monica Niculescu, world no. 71, on Tuesday qualified for the singles draw after defeating Italy's Roberta Vinci, now ranked 147th in the world, 6-4, 6-0 in the last qualifying round.
Niculescu thus joins four other Romanian players in the singles draw. Simona Halep, who is seeded first at this tournament, goes straight into the second round. World no. 36 Irina Begu faces Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic in the first round. World no. 35 Sorana Cirstea will play a qualifyier in her opening match and may face Venus Williams if she makes it to the second round. Finally, Mihaela Buzarnescu, world no. 38,will be facing the American player Jennifer Brady, who is ranked 86th in the world.
Last year, the title went to the Russian player Elena Vesnina, while Simona Halep was eliminated in the third round by the French player Kristina Mladenovic. Halep had won the tournament in Indian Wells in 2015, when she defeated Serbia's Jelena Jankovic in the final.
