Romania's women's handball team has won the first 3 matches played so far in the World Championships hosted by Germany. Group A matches are held in the city of Trier, in the west of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The Romanians won easily the first match, against Paraguay, 29-17, but the subsequent games were more difficult. Romania's second match was against Slovenia, which was coming after a surprising win against Olympic vice-champions France. The Slovenians played quite well against Romania, with a lead of as many as 5 goals in the first half. However, Romania picked up its game in the second half, and finished strong, 31 to 28.
After these first two matches, the leaders of Group A were Spain, with 2 wins, just like Romania, but with better goal average. The 2 teams faced each other in the third match of the group. It was a spectacular match, with each of the teams successively turning the score in its favour. Romania eventually won, 19-17.
We can safely say that, with 2 more games ahead in Group A, the Romanian players have already secured their qualification in the eighth-finals. The only unknown element at this point is their final position in the group, which plays a key role in terms of how difficult their future opponent will be. Romania's eighth-final challenger comes from Group B, which is currently headed by Norway, with 6 points in 3 games. The Czech Republic and Sweden have 4 points each, while Hungary and Poland 2 points each. Last in Group B is Argentina, with no points won so far.
In order to secure the top position in Group A, Romania needs to win both its remaining group matches. On Thursday at 6 PM the national team takes on Angola, and at the same time on Friday it is scheduled to play against France. (Translated by Ana Maria Popescu)
