Adrian Sulca won gold at the Youth Olympics
Buenos Aires in Argentina is playing host to the Youth Olympic Games. Romania's delegation comprises 34 athletes, 21 girls and 13 boys, enrolled in a total of 14 events. So far Romania has grabbed 8 medals, two gold, three silver and two bronze. The gold medals were won by Adrian Sulca in the 81-kg judo event, and by Sabina Baltag, in the 53-kg weightlifting event. The silver medals went to swimmer Daniel Martin, in the 100m and 200m backstroke races, and to the double-scull rowing crew made up of Florin Nicolae Arteni-Fintinariu and Alexandru Laurentiu Danciu. The bronze medals were won by weightlifter Mihaela Valentina Cambei, in the 48-kg category, by the women's double-scull rowing crew made up of Tabita Maftei and Alina Maria Baletchi, and by Andreea Dragoman in table tennis.
The first medal went to Adrian Sulca. For his solid performance in the judo event, we have designated Adrian Sulca Athlete of the Week on Radio Romania International.
Adrian Sulca competed in the men's 81-kg category, after earlier this year he scooped bronze in the 73-kg category at the European Youth Championships hosted by Bosnia Herzegovina. In the round of 16, Sulca knocked out Rihari Iki of New Zealand. In the quarterfinals he edged out Australia's Rhys Allan, and he eliminated Alex Barto of Slovakia in the semi-finals. In the final he defeated Mertin Bezdek of the Czech Republic by ippon.
Adrian Sulca was born on February 8, 2001 in Calafat, southern Romania. He is currently enrolled at the U-CSM Cluj sports club.
