Romanian weightlifter Nicolae Onica won bronze in the 96 kilogram category’s overall version, at the World Weightlifting Championships held last week in Turkmenistan’s Ashgabat
Onica totaled 391 kilograms, being outclassed by Iranian challenger Sohrab Moradi, with 416 kilograms and China's Tao Tian, with 407 kilograms. In the snatch style, Nicolae Onica came in 4th, with 175 kilograms, having failed in his last attempt to lift 182 kilograms, while in the clean and jerk style, Onica also came in 4th, with 175 kilograms, having again failed in his two attempts to lift 222 and 227 kilograms, respectively.
Romanian news agency Agerpress quoted Onica as saying, upon his return, "it is one of the happiest moments of my life, as it is the first World Seniors' championships I have taken part in, and which brought me my first medal".
Also stepping onto a step of the podium at the recently-held World Weightlifting Championships were two Romanian women weightlifters. Cristina Iovu won bronze in the clean and jerk style of the 55 kilogram category, while Loredana Toma grabbed the silver medal in the 64 kilogram category, also in the clean and jerk style.
25-year old Nicolae Onica was born in the Republic of Moldova. In 2013, Onica was granted Romanian citizenship, being signed up by Dinamo Bucharest sports club. Andrei Ficzi is Nicolae Onica's coach. In the spring of 2018, Nicolae Onica won three other medals at the European Championships hosted by the locality of Izvorani, nearby Bucharest.
Onica won silver in the 94-kilogram category's snatch style. Onica also won gold in the clean and jerk and gold in the overall event. We should also note that as of November 1st, the World Weightlifting Federation introduced new weight categories, so that Nicolae Onica is the first bronze medalist of the 96 kilogram-category.
