Laura Coman, air rifle
Guadalajara, in Mexico, is hosting these days the ISSF World Cup. Romanian athletes have put up a good performance so far, and mid-way into the competition scheduled to end on March 12th Romania is third in the nations’ ranking, with a gold and a silver medal.
The gold was won by Laura Coman, in the 10-m air rifle event. She won the final with 251.5 points, a performance, which is also a new European record. Romania’s silver medal went to Laura Coman and Alin Moldoveanu, in the 10-m air rifle mixed teams event. With a total of 498.4 points, they were outperformed only by Xu Hong and Chen Keduo of China, who scored a world record breaking of 502 points.
For the gold and silver medals won in Mexico, Radio Romania has designated Laura Coman as the Athlete of the Week.
Laura Coman was born in 1993 in Bucharest. She took up shooting in 2010 and has been taking part in official competitions since 2012. She is a member of Dinamo Bucharest Sports Club and is coached by Olimpiu Marin.
In February, at the European Shooting Championships in Gyor, Hungary, she won the European team title jointly with Roxana Tudose and Eliza Molnar.
Prior to the World Cup in Guadalajara, Coman was ranking 3rd in the world in air rifle 10-m, after the American Virginia Thrasher and Serbia’s Andrea Arsovic. However, the performance in Mexico sends the Romanian athlete to the world’s top position in this event.
